ORIGIN
Whitey Bulger was an Irish-American crime boss and FBI informant. He was affiliated with Boston’s Winter Hill Gang. He served as an informant from the mid-1975 to the 1990s. Bulger was captured in 2011. He was charged with a number of crimes ranging from federal racketeering to multiple murders. James Joseph Bulger Jr. was born on September 3, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were James Sr. and Jean Bulger. He had 5 siblings, including William, Jean, and John. The family fell into poverty and as a result, moved into the Mary Ellen McCormack Housing Project in South Boston.
CAREER
Bulger began his criminal career at age 14. He started out with small crimes like petty theft and street fights. His early rap sheet gave rise to the nickname “Whitey.” The name stuck with him due to his white-blond hair. As Bulger got older, he began committing more heinous crimes such as larceny, assault, and armed robbery. At one point he was sentenced to 5 years in a juvenile reformatory. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1948, shortly after his release. Whitey went AWOL in 1950 and was honorable discharged in 1952. He returned to Boston. In 1956, Bulger was arrested and sentenced to 25 years behind bars. He was released in 9 (3-years in Alcatraz). Bulger became a member of the notorious Winter Hill Gang in 1972. He climbed the ranks and quickly became a key figure on Boston’s organized crime front. He succeeded Howie Winter as the head of the Winter Hill Gang, a title he held for more than 15 years.
Despite his own organized crime network, Bulger served as an FBI informant. He tipped off law enforcers with information about the Patriarca crime family from the mid-1970s to the 1990s. Bulger fled Boston in 1994 after he was tipped off about a pending indictment. He was added to the FBI lists of most wanted fugitives in 1999, second only to Osama bin Laden. After more than 10 years on the run, Bulger was arrested on June 22, 2011, in the state of California. He was extradited to Massachusetts and his trial lasted for two months. He was charged with 11 murders, federal racketeering, conspiracy, and extortion.
The biographical documentary film Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger (2014) was based on his trials. Bulger was portrayed by Johnny Depp in the film Black Mass (2015). His criminal lifestyle also inspired the films The Blacklist (2013) and The Departed (2006), and the Showtime series Brotherhood. He has been featured on several episodes of America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back.
